Shortly before 18:00 hrs on Saturday evening, Ridge Meadows SAR was paged out by Ridge Meadows RCMP for a report of hikers stranded on Panorama Ridge in Golden Ears park. Subjects reported on a broken cell call that they were soaking wet and unable to find their way out of the clouds. We attempted to fly a team in but the weather and failing daylight were acting against us so we hiked two teams up to Panorama Ridge. With rain coming down in sheets and at (many) times blowing sideways, concern was growing for our subjects who we are now able to number at 4....3 males and a female. As the teams neared Panorama Ridge, the weather started throwing thunder and lightning off in the distance. Shortly after 02:00, the first team made contact with the subjects who were by this time, soaked to the skin and the tent that they were in was flooded. After a quick assessment, heat blankets and with some assistance, everyone made a dash to the Emergency Shelter some 200 meters away.

Once at the shelter, a more thorough assessment was done and the subjects were stripped of their wet clothing and put into dry clothing brought up by the rescuers. They were also fed and given warm liquids.

The plan now was how to get them off the mountain. Placing a call to the Emergency Coordination Centre of EMBC in Victoria, the operator was able to connect us with Environment Canada for an updated spot weather forecast which indicated that the front was passing through and the rain would be with us for the rest of the day along with possibility of thunder and lightning.

We were able to secure two helicopters - one from Talon flown by Kelsey and a second machine flown by Brad from Valley Helicopters. After poking around the ridge, both pilots were able to find a clearing in the clouds, make landing and pick up everyone on the mountain.

BCAS crew checked the subjects out and released them. Task completed at 11:30 Sunday morning.

One subject was complaining of an ankle injury and fatigue and was unsure of their location. We sent a team up West Canyon and the UTV team up East Canyon road. Subjects were located on the West side of the bridge just up the trail. We transported them back to the parking lot and the task was completed shortly after 01:00.

🔊 Public Safety Announcement‼️

The ‘Labour Day Long Weekend ’ is about celebrating with one last summer adventure, your investment in ‘trip safety’ can mean the difference between a successful outcome & becoming a statistic.

“What can YOU do?”

1. Plan your trip/file a trip plan – SAR will locate you faster, often resulting you being in better condition.

2. Check in with ‘yourself’ – are you (and your group, including dogs) physically and mentally capable of this activity?

3. Can you spend the night if necessary? Taking essentials + seasonal and sport specific gear is highly recommended.

In the early morning hours of Friday August 23, RMSAR was tasked out for a report of an overdue hiker in Golden Ears Park.
After a brief search, the hiker was located in the Alder Flats area, camping for the night.
Although this appears to simply be a case of miscommunication between the hiker and the reporting party, the reporting party did the right thing by calling for assistance. It is always better to be called out and not needed than needed and not called out.
